Know What You Are Hiring For
Handymen are great for a long list of small and medium jobs: repairs, installs, painting, drywall, doors, fences, and general fixes. Bigger projects, or ones that involve structural, electrical, or plumbing work, can fall under contractor licensing rules in California. When in doubt, ask, and check the state contractor license board at cslb.ca.gov for requirements.
What to Ask Before You Hire
- Are you licensed where required, and insured? A good handyman answers this plainly.
- How long have you been in business? A track record matters.
- Do you have references or a business profile I can check? For example, a Better Business Bureau profile shows accreditation, rating, and complaint history.
- Will you give me a written estimate before work starts?
- Who will actually do the work?
What a Fair Estimate Looks Like
A good estimate describes the work, the materials, and the price in plain language. It tells you what is included and what is not. It should not be a number scribbled on a business card, and it should not pressure you to decide on the spot.
Red Flags
- A large cash deposit demanded up front.
- Pressure to decide today or the price goes up.
- No address, no phone number, or no way to reach them after the job.
- A price that is far lower than every other quote. Cheap work often costs more to redo.
What Good Looks Like
Someone who listens, explains what the job needs, tells you honestly if something is outside their scope, and cleans up when they leave. That is what we aim for on every call.
